How Civilization 7 Could Make Rivers More Exciting – My Take

I came across this blog post by Max Borman over at GameRant that discusses new mechanics being implemented by Sid Meier's newest Civilization game, Civilization 7. While reading it, it got me thinking about the new game in a positive light. 

Every time I had traveled with my laptop, whether it was a gaming one or a work one, I had always used Sid Meier's Civilization games as a way to pass the time, and when the area I was in had no access to wifi, their games were compatible without and could be played solo too. I spent most of my hours playing Civilization 5 and a little bit of 6. When I heard about this new game being released, I kept looking around the web looking for blog posts or YouTube videos covering this game. Finding this blog post kept me positive about this game. 

As said in this post, "players were forced to just sail the open seas during their Civilization journey, and were never really able to explore any other bodies of water." This is exactly how I felt. There were a ton of water based wonders, rivers, lakes, and other areas where it would be cool to interact with like moving units through there or even gaining some resource from it instead of just food tiles. This post states that Firaxis, the video game developer behind the Civilization series, has acknowledged the player's feedback on these water-based tiles and decided to make it possible to move units through rivers now! That might sound like a small addition to the game, but trust me, that is HUGE. Being able to strategically plan your lands to use river tiles as a way of faster transport can be the difference maker of 15+ turns.

While this is a cool addition and makes Civ 7 interesting, I thought some more. Why stop there? Since they decided to make rivers more interactable, they can surely add more to them, maybe as quality-of-life changes, or even some new mechanics. I had always found it weird that while the river tiles did have food in them, they did not have a dedicated fish tile on them, maybe like Salmon tiles or something. Or no river-based animals that can be used for luxury purposes like beavers or bears.

I always had a soft place in my heart for the Civ games, as they accompanied me in my travels. I am looking forward to seeing this game release and hope they add more things not only to rivers but to the whole game itself.
